REFEREE SPOTLIGHT: Sidney John - Dominica

Despite his youth Sidney John has served the sport of volleyball as a player, coach, referee, and administrator.

Sidney was introduced to the game at the age of 15 while he was a student at the Portsmouth Secondary School. He continued to represent the Dominica State College, winning the Schools Championship in his first year. He has represented the Club One Volleyball Club since 2018, winning championships in 3 out of his 4 seasons with the club.

He briefly moved to Jamaica to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Economics & Mathematics, where he represented the University of the West Indies in both intercollegiate and Club competitions. Sidney later moved to Trinidad & Tobago to pursue a Masters Degree in Mathematics. While there he trained and played with Glamorgan Volleyball Club for 2 years.

Sidney's first time representing Dominica came at the 2024 ECVA Senior Championships, where a youthful Dominican team claimed the silver medal. That was followed up with a bronze medal at the 2025 ECVA Final Four.

In 2021 he completed the FIVB Level I coaches program, further strengthing his knowledge of the game. Since then, he has assisted his club teams and coachs teams in the local business league and the Dominica State College team.

Sidney began refereeing in 2019 in the Secondary Schools Volleyball Competition. Since then he has earned ECVA National Referee certifications for both indoor and beach volleyball. He has served as a referee in Dominicas local league, and in 2025 officiated at the ECVA Junior Beach Tournament.

Since joining the local volleyball fraternity, he has taken up a number of administrative roles including Club President (2023-2025), NationalTechnical Committee member, and is currently it the Public Relations Officer of the DAVA.
