ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Yashid Auguiste - National Volleyball Player | Defensive Specialist | ECVA Gold Medalist

Yashid Auguiste’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and purpose. From humble beginnings as a young multi-sport athlete to becoming one of the Caribbean’s premier defensive specialists in volleyball, his story reflects what can happen when talent meets discipline and determination.

Introduced to volleyball around 2011 during his secondary school years, Yashid quickly discovered his calling. Though he began his athletic journey playing football and basketball, volleyball soon captured his focus and commitment. Under the mentorship of senior national player Matthew, Yashid transitioned from a promising outside hitter into a dynamic and intelligent player with a deep understanding of the game.

His rapid development earned him selection to the Junior National Team in 2011, and by 2016 he had secured a place on Antigua and Barbuda’s Senior Men’s National Team. Over time, he evolved into a dominant libero — a position that demands agility, courage, leadership, and relentless focus. Yashid embraced that challenge and made it his signature role.

One of Yashid Auguiste’s most notable achievements came at the 2018 ECVA Senior Men’s Championship held in St. George’s, Grenada. His exceptional performance as libero earned him recognition in three of the tournament’s twelve individual award categories — Best Digger, Best Receiver, and Best Libero — while narrowly missing the MVP accolade. This accomplishment marked a turning point in his volleyball career and further fueled his ambition to become the first libero to win the tournament’s MVP award, a goal he continues to pursue every time he steps onto the court.

In recognition of his outstanding performances and dedication to the sport that year, Auguiste was nominated by the national association for the Ministry of Sports Senior Sportsman of the Year award.

In 2024, representing the Pytonz Volleyball Club, he helped secure a second-place finish in the national league and later captured the President’s Cup Championship title. That same year, he delivered an exceptional performance on home soil at the ECVA Senior Men’s Championship, where Antigua and Barbuda claimed the gold medal. His outstanding defensive display once again earned him two of the tournament’s highest individual honors — Best Digger and Best Libero.

His impact in 2024 extended beyond the court. In recognition of his dedication, leadership, and international success, Yashid was once again nominated by the national association for Senior Sportsman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards — a prestigious acknowledgment of his contribution to sport in Antigua and Barbuda.

His excellence continued beyond the region. In August 2025, he made his debut at the Pan American Cup in Mexico, competing among some of the top athletes in the Americas. Holding his own on that stage marked a defining moment in his career and reinforced his growth as an international competitor.

The following month, he returned home to help lead Antigua and Barbuda to victory at the ECVA Final Four Senior Men’s Championship, once again earning Best Libero and Best Digger honors for his commanding defensive performance.

Throughout his career, Yashid has accumulated multiple Best Digger, Best Receiver, and Best Libero awards — but his impact extends far beyond trophies. Known for his relentless hustle, composure under pressure, and unwavering discipline, he inspires teammates and young athletes alike. He believes that greatness is built through consistency, humility, and hard work.

Yashid dreams of becoming the first libero in the region to capture three major individual awards in a single championship, including MVP. Even more importantly, he is committed to giving back to the sport that shaped him by mentoring young players and pursuing his volleyball coaching certification.

His journey proves that with dedication and belief, a young athlete from a small island can rise to compete — and excel — on the regional and international stage.

Yashid Auguiste is not just a defender on the court — he is a defender of dreams, discipline, and determination.
