Q: Playing this tournament on home court in Tortola — what was it like having your own crowd behind you, and did that extra support change the way you played?
A: To be honest, when you're on court you completely block all the noise out — not on purpose it just happens — but then when you catch yourself and look at the crowd smiling and cheering it hits you hard. It's just unbelievable to think all these people made time to support you and truly want to see you play your best. It a great feeling, really.
Q: Every athlete has a journey to get to a moment like this — what has your path in volleyball looked like, and what were some of the challenges you had to push through along the way?
A: I've been playing for 4 years now. Starting out it really was just something i did after school for fun without the expectation of playing competitive. I actually never even thought I'd play competitively with my University either but now it's a part of my daily routine. One of my biggest struggles while playing for 4 years has definitely been consistency. Staying in the gym, making time for friends and family, staying active during off-season, travelling, etc. it's a lot to balance when you're trying to forge the best version of yourself for the court. Something that's helped me push through that is playing all year round. Playing during Christmas, Easter, Summer breaks ; playing in-door, grass, beach volleyball, every minute of practice helps!
Q: Being named Best Middle Blocker, how did that moment feel once it sank in, and who did you want to celebrate it with first?
A: I was actually surprised when my coach brought up my stats before I got the reward. I didn't really think I was doing anything special until my coach told me I was leading in the tournament's blocking stats. I thought to myself "I don't think i'll get much court time to keep the lead, but nice I was leading regardless". When they made the announcement at the reward ceremony I didn't even realised they called me…I was talking to my teammate actually. Everyone from my team started cheering and waved me over because they called me for best blocker. I was in shock for the most part but I immediately wanted to celebrate with both national teams. I was nice to bring something back for both teams you know.
Q: As someone who's reached this level, how do you see yourself helping to shape and grow volleyball back on your island for the next generation of players?
A: I think I already play a part to an extent. During the summer I teach volleyball at a sport summer camp for kids ranging from ages 5 to 16. Even despite challenges we face with facilities often it's still such an addictive sport to play, and it's even more motivating to see the summer camp kids' passion for the sport grow alongside their skills. I think seeing them build drive for the sport and truly get better keeps me coming back home. The sport has grown a lot from when I started and it's great to see and I can't wait to keep staying involved.
