Women’s teams reach business end in ECVA Beach showdown

BASSETTERE: St Kitts and Nevis, Aug 31. 2024: Anguilla staged a second and third set comebacks, to oust defending champion- Dominica, to reach the semifinals in the Women’s segment of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Under-21 Championships here at the Marriot Beach.

Represented by Lavesha Richardson and Deandra Flemming, Anguilla came from a set down to humble Alyssa Bully and Nyla Edmund, pulling out all the stops to win 2-1 (10-21,  21-14, 15-13).

It was uncontrolled joy for the Anguillans, as they left the Dominicans spellbound.

Likewise, St Lucia, who did not light up day one, returned on day two with some aplomb, to join Anguilla in the last four.

St Lucia’s Kurtrice Jules and Marie -Therese St Clair ended Gerelvia Spanner and Elshe Spanner of St Eustacius run of wins, beating them 2-0 (21-18, 21-12).

Meanwhile, Bermuda, via Isabella Sousa and Hailey Trott gained their semi-finals advancement at the expense of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Nayelli Fergus and Reanna Robinson, trumping 2-0 (21-12, 21- 6).

And, Antigua and Barbuda’s combination of Jaya Carr and Jassania Joseph saw off Grenada’s Teasia Jones and Makyala Mason 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) to stay unblemished after three matches.

Pool Play

Day Two also hosted matches in Pool play as Bully/ Edmund beat Andrew/ Jules 2-0 (21-4, 21-15) in Pool B; Carr/ Joseph beat Campbell/ Thomas 2-0(21-5, 21-7) in Pool C, and in Pool D, Spanner/ Spanner beat Alwani versus Hensley- Phillip 2-1(16-21, 21-10, 15-4)   and Jones/ Mason defeated Johnson/ Gomez 2-0 (21-8, 21-8)

Play Offs

Fergus/ Robinson def. Johnson/ Gomez 2-0 (21-7, 21-19); Jules/ St Clair beat Drayton/ Scatliffe 2-0 (21-12, 21-8), while Richardson/ Flemming def. Campbell/ Thomas 2-0 (21-12, 21-8) and Jones/ Mason def.  Andrew/ Jules 2-0 (21-9, 21-6).

Consolation Play

Bully/ Edmund def. Jones/ Mason 2-1(21-18, 20-22, 15-4); Spanner/ Spanner def. Fergus/ Robinson 2-0 (21-13, 21-16); Andrew/ Jules def. Cambell/ Thomas 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) and Johnson/ Gomez def. Drayton/ Scatliffe 2-0 (21-15, 21-9).
