ST JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda, October 20, 2024: A 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17) win over St Maarten saw St Lucia returning to winning ways in the 2024 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Women’s Championships here at the YMCA Sports Complex.
After faltering against Bermuda in their previous encounter, St Lucia showed intent that they want to be in the title decider, as they pulled out all the stops against St Maarten.
St Lucia, with two matches in hand, has two wins and a loss, while St Maarten is without out a win from their four matches.
Cindy Wilson, St Lucia’s Captain, was happy that her team was able to rebound and win comfortably against the St Maarten team, citing better composure as the key for their success.
“We were a bit more composed… We know what we are coming into, so we know every game we have to be prepared”, Wilson expounded.
Knowing that they are in a must win situation for their remaining two matches, Wilson admitted, “We are not going to underestimate any team”.
Whilst, the St Lucia camp thought it was their composure that saw them through, for St Maarten, it was the total opposite, according to their Head Coach and Captain.
St Maarten’s Head Coach- Dimitri Beauperthuy, in his assessment of the match said, “We played really timid in the beginning, but I love the way we fought in the end and I do hope in our match against Grenada, we start with that energy”.
Supporting her coach’s view, Captain- Chelsey Augustine concurred, “It was timidness, it was nervousness… The fact that we had to play hard and this is a tough team as well, but I feel that we give them the better hand, yes, we know they are good, but we didn’t put our best foot forward”.
The next match in the championships features St Maarten versus Grenada.
