🏐🇩🇲 J'DEN ROBINSON – BEST SETTER, 2026 ECVA MEN'S SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP (TORTOLA, BVI)
He made the court run all week in Tortola, and he left with the Best Setter award. We caught up with J'den to talk about the moment, the pressure, the team and what's next. 👇
Q: J'den, congratulations on being named Best Setter in Tortola. Take us back to the moment your name was called. What was going through your mind, and what does this award mean to you personally?
R: J'den:When I heard my name called, it was definitely a proud and emotional moment for me. This being my first individual award at an ECVA championship already made it special, but what made it mean even more was the history behind it for my family.
My father represented Dominica in volleyball as well, and he won the Best Setter award a few times during his playing career. So for me to now represent my country and receive that same award felt like a full-circle moment. Growing up knowing what he accomplished and then being able to achieve something similar myself is something I'll always appreciate.
Q: A setter has to stay calm and make split-second decisions on every rally. How did you prepare yourself mentally for this championship, and what did you do to stay focused and composed when the pressure was on?
R: J'den: For me, it was about trusting the work I had already put in and staying in the moment. As a setter, you have to make quick decisions, so I tried not to dwell on mistakes and just focus on the next ball.
When the pressure was on, I trusted my teammates, stayed confident and reminded myself to enjoy the moment. Representing Dominica is something I'm proud of, so I wanted to embrace the pressure rather than let it affect my game.
Q: From your position you see the whole court. How do you feel the team performed in the BVI, and what are you most proud of from the week?
R: J'den:I think we performed well overall. Obviously, our goal was to win the championship, so losing in the semifinals was disappointing, but we were still able to regroup, finish strong and secure third place.
What I'm most proud of is how we stuck together throughout the tournament. Even when things didn't go our way, we continued to fight for each other and represent Dominica with pride. There's definitely a lot we can take from this experience and build on going forward.
Q: With this award now to your name, what's next for you? What goals have you set for yourself, both in volleyball and beyond?
R: J'den: For me, the goal is to keep growing. In volleyball, I want to continue developing my game, become a better leader and help Dominica compete for championships at the regional level. Beyond volleyball, I'm focused on building my career and continuing my education. I want to keep progressing professionally while still giving my best to the sport. Right now it's all about becoming better in every area of my life and seeing how far I can go.
Q: What message would you like to send to the young volleyballers here in Dominica who look up to you and dream of representing the Nature Isle?
R: J'den:My message to the young volleyballers in Dominica would be to keep working, stay disciplined and believe in yourself. There will be setbacks along the way, but don't let them discourage you. Representing Dominica is a privilege and something you should always take pride in. Keep learning, keep practicing and take advantage of every opportunity you get. Most importantly, be willing to listen and learn from your coaches. They want to see you succeed, and the advice they give can play a big part in helping you grow both as a player and as a person.
