Behind every big kill is a dig that kept the rally alive. Grenada's Shevon Gludd was named Best Digger at the 2026 ECVA Championship, and we caught up with him to talk defence, focus, and representing the Spice Isle.
Q: Being named Best Digger in Tortola is a major individual honour. What was going through your mind in that moment, and who back home were you most eager to share it with?
A: It honestly felt really good. I was proud of myself because I knew how much work I had put in, and it was nice to see that recognized. The first people I wanted to share it with were my family and everyone back home who supported me.
Q: Digging rarely makes the highlight reel, yet it's what keeps a team in the fight. What's happening in your head during those split-second reactions?
A: Honestly, I don't really have much time to think. I just react and trust my training. I try to read where the ball is going and do everything I can to keep it up for my team.
Q: What does it take, physically and mentally, to stay sharp defensively over an entire tournament, especially against some of the region's most powerful hitters?
A: You have to be physically fit, but I think the mental side is just as important. You have to stay focused, even when you're tired, and be ready for every ball because the next play could be the one that matters.
Q: What did it mean to wear Grenada's colours in Tortola, and what was the team's mindset going into the championship?
A: It felt really good to represent Grenada in Tortola. We went into the championship wanting to compete, support each other, and give our best every time we stepped on the court. Most importantly, we wanted to make Grenada proud.
Q: What advice would you give young Grenadian players who dream of becoming strong defensive players?
A: I'd tell young players to keep working and don't get discouraged. Defence takes a lot of patience and practice. Trust yourself, listen to your coaches, and always give 100%, even when the ball seems impossible to save.
